A Globetrotting Guide to
the Internet The White Sails of Lono In November of 1778 strange temples were seen on the horizon out at sea. The white banners of the god Lono, could be seen on the temples. Slowly the temples neared the shore at Hana as the people waited in awe on the shore. King Kalaniopuu filled canoes with gifts of taro, pigs, vegetables and fruits as an offering to Lono upon the floating temple. The king with the young chief Keoua-of-the-Flaming-Cloak and Kamehameha set off in the war canoe towards the approaching temples. A rope was lowered and the temple was entered. It was here that Kamehameha was introduced to Captain James Cook The Hawaiians believed the explorer to be Lono and treated him as a god. They were generous in presenting offerings and in time would come to realize that Captain James Cook was not as they had believed leading to the death of the great explorer at Kealekekua Bay on the Island of Hawaii. The arrival of these sailing ships would bring great change to Hawaii. In time many more ships would arrive, bringing metal, firearms, and disease. The Distribution of Power As King Kalaniopuu became ill a few years later the question arose to the distribution of power. Through much consultation with his Great Council it was decided that rulership would go to his son Kiwalao and a large division of land to Keoua-of-the-Flaming-Cloak. Kamehameha would become the custodian of the ancestral war god Kukailimoku and have personal supervision of the temples, and was bestowed the lands of Waipio. The people of Waipio were pleased the land had been granted to Kamehameha. They presented to him the legendary conch shell, Kihapu. Continue The Legend of Kihapu
