The Legend of Kihapu

It is believed the conch shell was brought to Hawaii centuries ago and has brought fortune to many a ruler. When blown by one with the proper spiritual power it could call forth the aid of the gods themselves. All needs of the moment would be provided. For many years the shell had been hidden in the Waipio Valley and now it belonged to the young chief, Kamehameha.

Following the death of the king disputes set forth about the allotment of lands. Kamehameha accepted the decisions, however, his followers were not happy, feeling that a disproportionate share had gone to the chiefs surrounding Kiwalao. Keoua-of-the-Flaming-Cloak felt his share was too small. Surrounded by discontent and anger, Kamehameha's trusted advisor Kekuhaupio urged the chief to take action. Before he had a chance to do so, Keoua led a surprise attack, killing a group of Kamehameha's defenseless citizens. A swift battle followed in which the King Kiwalao was killed and his followers defeated. Keoua escaped it all fleeing by canoe to Ka'u. For many years he would continue to harass Kamehameha.

Following the battle, Kamehameha emerged as a leader, with dominion over the greater part of the island.
