A Globetrotting Guide to
the Internet Encounter With Keoua-of-the-Flaming-Cloak A dispatch was sent to Ka'u requesting that Keoua-of-the-Flaming-Cloak come to Kawaihae. The invitation was accepted, two canoes with the highest chiefs of canoe set forth to Kawaihae Bay. Along the way Keoua noticed a strange omen and remarked, "The clouds are flying wildly." One of the young chiefs answered, "For whom shall evil come." Keoua merely repeated, "The clouds are flying wildly." When the canoes approached Kawaihae Bay, Keoua saw the new temple. Filled with fear, he stepped boldly ashore and was killed instantly by a spear thrown by High Chief Keeaumoku. Fierce fighting began and continued until all of Keoua's supporters were slain. The second canoe was led by the young Kaoleioku. Kamehameha gave the orders, "Spare them all, for the leader is the child of my beardless youth - the lovechild of my days in Ka'u." Kaoleioku and his men were saved. The following day the body of Keoua-of-the-Flaming-Cloak and of several other chiefs were taken to the temple and offered as a sacrifice to the war god Kukailimoku. Kamehameha became the single ruler of the Island of Hawaii. Learn more about Kamehameha I Kamehameha the Great - Ruler of the Hawaiian Kingdom from 1795-1819.
