Health, Happiness and the Aloha Prescription In his book The Pleasure Prescription, Paul Pearsall presents his prescription for conquering the Delight Deficiency Syndrome. This new plague is the cause of more than one of every four health complaints in the United States, the leading cause of death in Japan, is among the top five reasons people call their doctors, and directly or indirectly contributes to death more than any other factor. Not only does it slowly destroy its victim, but spreads to family, friends, and the community. Although not a virus or a bacteria, it weakens the body's defenses against these invaders. Are you a candidate for for the Delight Deficiency Syndrome? Check and see how many of the symptoms may have invaded your life. If your score suggests that you are suffering from the Delight Deficiency Syndrome there is good news. There is a cure: daily doses of pleasure. The prescription isn't available as a pill or potion, the results are more of a way of "being" or a basic way of life. The first dose of the pleasure prescription involves exploring your current lifestyle and your body's instinctive needs and desires. It is from there that you can understand how an alternative approach to daily living can offer you a better physical, mental and spiritual life. The Polynesians call it lamalama ka'ili, enjoying every moment in your life, even those times when you are feeling ill or not too happy with your life. The Polynesians taught that a joyful and healthy life was based on our seventh sense the instinctive drive to what is healthful and pleasurable. It was manifested in what they called aloha. Alo means to share and ha to breath, literally to give and share the breath of life. The pleasure prescription begins with catching your breath, finding the relaxation, happiness, and long life that come from giving and sharing this breath. Paul Pearsall experienced the power of the pleasure prescription in its moment-to-moment joy throughout the ups and downs of life when he was watching a young hula dancer. She smiles and swayed gracefully with the beautiful music. As she danced she was crying. He approached the dancer afterwards and said, "You did such a beautiful dance today. You moved so wonderfully even though you seemed sad." She smiled and wiped a tear from the corner of her eye, and said, "I am very sad. I have just learned that I have a tumor in my breast. This is the best time to dance. Dancing is easy when you are happy, but it is healing and necessary when you are hurt. Life is a hula, and you must learn to love and share the hula no matter what life has given you. Hula helps me keep the harmony in my life even when the music nature plays for me is not pretty. Right is no more important than left. Your hula is a way of being in pono (balance) and staying in pololei (connection)." Do you dance through life, or just go through the motions? Do you move in harmony and balance and connection, or are you rushing to the next step? What is it that keeps you from dancing in the moment? The Aloha Test Pilahi Paki describes aloha as the fundamental principle of life in Polynesia. Aloha has many meanings, including love, giving of sacred breath, hello and goodbye. It is the perfect word to remind those of us to slow down and find the pleasure in our life. Paul Pearsall designed the Aloha Test in 19991 after conducting interviews with kahuna (healers) and kapuna (elders). Unlike most Western tests the Aloha test is not designed for a high score. What is your aloha rating? Your Invitation to Paradise Are you ready to invite the elements of aloha into your life. This brief feature is an introduction to Paul Pearsall's, The Pleasure Prescription - To Love, to Work, to Play - Life in the Balance. To benefit from your full potential through aloha I recommend reading the book in its entirety. I wish you aloha in discovering the potential which can bring paradise into your life.
